She stepped as quietly as possible for a 5 year-old down the hall. She stopped, snuck a peak around the corner. Good she's sleeping, she thought. She tip-toe ran to the window. I pushed it open, it's very heavy for a young girl. Finally its my birthday again! I hope one day Mother will take me to see the floating lights. They're so pretty! She thought as she did every year on her birthday.
Rapunzel looked out the window in awe. All the colors, Orange, Yellow, Pink! She sighed and rested her head on her arm as she watched the mysterious floating lights. She wondered why Mother Gothel would never take her to see them. By now the lights were fading into the black night. Rapunzel sighed and turned away, but something caught her beautiful green eyes. She turned around, a light was floating towards her! She reached as far as possible out the window. The light floated into her tiny grasp.
I wonder what this thing is? She thought. She heard her Mother stir and mumble drowsily
"Rapunzel?" Rapunzel pushed the yellow lantern into the sky and watched it float away. Wishing she didn't let it go. She knew it would make mother mad though. She studied the light a bit longer and noticed a odd sun symbol on the sides. She hurried back to her tower bedroom and dove under the covers. Her long golden hair snagged on the side of the bed. She tried pulling it out, she couldn't. She started crying.
"Rapunzel what on earth is the matter its 11 O'clock at night!" Gothel was muttering angrily as she stomped into the room.
"Your hair!" Gothel nearly screamed. She rushed over to the child and started picking up the bed to gently release the young girls hair. Rapunzel stopped crying, and looked up at her mother.
" Mommy, why cant I go outside?" She asked so innocently Gothel smiled and sat down next to her.
" Like I told you before Rapunzel, the world is a dangerous place. Do you understand Flower?" Gothel used the girls nickname she created for her to soften her up.
"Yes, Mommy" Rapunzel sighed a little girl sigh that any normal person's heart would brake at the sound.
Eugene sat in his makeshift bed, wondering about the world. He was very intelligent and swift for a 13 year-old. He was in trouble for stealing again. It was only a stupid apple. He thought as the orphanage keeper yelled at him. As usual he just sat there eyeing the old lady coldly. After she lumbered out of the room mumbling to herself about what she did wrong with this one.
That was exactly it, Eugene was only a this one or a him or a orphan. He knew he had more potential. He wanted to be in a family. With a mother and a father. His parents died when he was nearly two in a wagon accident. A tragic thing really, growing up with no parents was hard on a boy like Eugene.
He walked into the living room in the Orphanage all the littler kids ran and screamed when he came in.
"Will you read us the book again?" They all asked simultaneously. What could he do, say no? To a bunch of 5-year-olds? Obviously not, least the book was his favorite. The Tales of Flynnagen Rider. He told the children to wait a moment and went upstairs and grabbed the beloved book. He walked down the steps, sat in the story chair, and began to read to the kids.
" Once upon a time Flynnagen Rider was running through the forest.."
Rapunzel sat on the pillow on the floor and sang the haunting incantation, as Gothel brushed her hair, to become young once again.
"Flower, gleam and glow. Let your powers shine. Make the clock reverse. Bring back what once was mine. Heal what has been hurt, Change the Fates design. Save what has been lost. Bring back what once was mine. What once was mine." The little girl ended the song and looked up at her so-called mother.
"Mommy tell me a story." She asked batting her large green eyes, as her blonde hair's glow faded away.
"What kind of story sweetie?" Gothel asked, she truly did love the child. She raised it as her own.
"A book about adventures." Rapunzel smiled as her mother went to the bookshelves and picked up one she hasn't read to Rapunzel yet. She just got it from the library 2 days ago.
"How about The Tales of Flynnagen Rider? " Gothel asked as if she was delighted to please the young girl. Rapunzel nodded her head and laid down on her bed and waited for Gothel to start.
" Once upon a time Flynnagen Rider was running through the forest.."
Eugene was up early the next morning. Around 8am. He stretched went to the bathroom, brushed his teeth and hair, and walked out the door. He didn't care about asking anymore. He was a teenager now. He walked through the streets. His chest held high, charmingly smiled at everyone he passed.
"Hello ladies." he said so charmingly the girls across the fountain giggled. He stopped and looked up at the Mural or the Lost Princess and her parents.
"What a shame." said a old husky man on his right. It was a beautiful sunny day in the kingdom. Eugene turned to study the man.
"Yes it is a shame isn't it." He said though he really didn't care. Then a as if a light-bulb went off he had an idea. If he rescued the Lost Princess everyone would be proud of him. Maybe someone would adopt him. He shrugged the thought off. It was an impossible task, meant for knights in shining amour. At that point the was thinking about a life of riches and royalties. Never having to steal anything to fill his stomach. That's gonna happen. He thought sarcastically.
Rapunzel was watching out her window, thinking about the wonderful book her mother read her last night, when she heard a little squeak. She leaned out the window to investigate. She looked around, nothing. She leaned back in and heard the squeaking again. This time she sat on the window seal and looked through the flower pots she painted earlier that day. She found a little green animal. What's this? She thought as she held it in her hands. The animal seemed perfectly content there looking up at her with little, but big brown eyes since is was still a baby.
" Are you a frog?" Rapunzel asked the little creature. It looked at her as if it was not amused, rather annoyed actually. She carried the green creature inside and picked up her favorite animal book. He plopped down on her shoulder and looked at the book with her. She flipped through pages until she came across one titled Chameleon. She looked at the creature
"Are you a chameleon? She asked the little thing. He nodded.
"Will you stay with me and be my friend?' Little Rapunzel asked the Chameleon. Again he nodded yes. At the Rapunzel danced around the room swinging the Chameleon around with her.
"What should I name you?" She asked him. The green chameleon jumped off her shoulder and walked to a book called Chameleons by Pascal. He used his tail and pointed.
"Pascal? Pascal, I like it! Hi Pascal!" Pascal jumped on her shoulder as she started to tell him her dreams and favorite things.
Eugene sat on the fountain, unnoticing the girls who he spoke to earlier were watching him. They obviously thought he was attractive, and he was. A strongly built 13-year-old with nice brown hair, a to-die-for smile, and deep brown eyes to match. He stood up and started walking back to the orphanage. One of the girls walked up to him.
"Hi." she said very shyly. Eugene looked her over. She was pretty, blue eyes, brown hair.
"Hey, whattya need?" Eugene asked charmingly not wanting to scare the pretty girl with his pity.
"I, Umm.." the girl started stammering. " I just wanted to say hi." She walked away then Eugene didn't care so much though he wasn't in the mood at that moment. He walked back to the orphanage he was daydreaming about being Flynn Rider. A swash-buckling hero, rich beyond belief, and not bad with the ladies either. He was fantasizing about his dream, a life with no one to tell him no.
